Outdoor enthusiasts will find Bahamas a haven for exciting activities and ultimate fun under the sun. If you think Bahamas is all about water theme parks, all-inclusive hotels and lackluster golfing, then you have not seen everything this archipelago country has to offer. If you are looking for challenging activities that thrill and inspire, then you have to venture out from the popular islands of Bahamas to its untamed yet more interesting locations.

If you are serious about underwater exploration and want to do better than cute and colorful tropical fishes, then don’t just limit yourself to the diving and snorkeling spots of the New Providence Island or the areas surrounding Nassau. Go where the action truly is – the Bimini reefs – where you can swim with stingrays and barracudas or dolphins and giant loggerhead turtles among the customary multi-hued fish and bountiful underwater foliage. The Elbow and Exumas Cays also feature fascinating underwater gardens that are worth checking out.

Sailing is the next most popular outdoor adventure in the Bahamas. With its colorful sparkling waters, hundreds of cays and thousands of islets, it is a perfect spot to power up your boat and go exploring the rich canvas of the Bahamas. No more rubbing shoulders with hundreds of tourists and no more sharing a crowded beach with rowdy beach bums, you can just hop on your boat and sail to a remote island paradise. Then, you can enjoy the serenity of spectacular scenery and stunning beaches all your own.

The underwater treasures of the Bahamas are not just for sightseeing but make for a challenging catch as well. If fishing is your sport, then you will have your hands full here. The options are endless: bone-fishing, fly-fishing or deep sea fishing, all these and more are available in most parts of the Bahamian islands. You don’t even have to worry about gear, fishing is a famous attraction in the area and there are plenty of places to score your favorite equipment. There are also countless fishing lodges that are more than willing to accommodate you. Check out the magnificent Bimini for deep-sea fishing, Green Turtle at Abaco for bone-fishing or bottom-fishing and Treasure Cay for a big marlin catch.

Finally, the Bahamas is not just all about water activities. Bird watchers will find the area a fertile ground for bird watching and also some decent hiking trails for avid amblers. The Exumas Cay Land and Sea Park is not just famous for its spectacular underwater gardens but also for the various species of birds that can be found in its wildlife sanctuary.

Another major destination for bird-watching and hiking in the country is the Abaco National Park. Its verdant forest is home to warblers, Cuban Emeralds, flycatchers and yellow-throats and the endangered Bahama parrot as well.  Just follow the nature trail and you’ll soon find the music and the visual of the park’s abundant bird residents.

Another birdwatcher’s paradise is the nature reserve of Inagua which is also home to the Bahama parrot and endemic species of the woodstar hummingbird, swallow and yellow warble. There are also some idyllic white sand beaches around Inagua where you can lounge and relax to your heart’s content in tranquility and peace.

Hikers will delight in the many trails and breathtaking scenery of St. Lucia. Its diverse topography and stunning natural landscape makes it one of the most picturesque locations to explore on foot. If you are the kind who lives for the next challenging trail then you will have plenty to explore hiking the area.

The Pitons are any hikers dream destination. The twin peaks of Petit Piton standing at 2,461 ft. and Gros Piton at 2,619 ft. will provide the challenges that any able hikers seek. The hike is going to be strenuous and an expert guide is a must if you wish to conquer these heights. Also, you need to seek permission from the Forest and Land Department of St. Lucia or at Fond Gens Libre at the foot of Gros Piton before you head out to a truly adventurous hike.

Actually, it is more of a climb really because there are some parts where you will need the help of some ropes to hoist yourself up. Since Petit Piton is so much steeper than Gros Piton, it is best to content yourself with the latter. The views along the way until you reach the summit are exceptionally breathtaking, literally and figuratively.

Next, there is Barre de L’isle Rain Forest whose trails snake through a verdant rainforest. Once on site, follow the route to Morne la Combe if you wish to test your stamina. Also, be on the lookout for spectacular vistas of the valleys of Roseau and Mabouya.

Another interesting trail worth discovering is located at Hardy Point Cactus Valley. As the name suggests, there are several species of cactus to find in the area. If you explore further, you will find yourself facing the ocean and the opportunity to see the water blowholes explode in front of you.

You can then proceed to the nearby Donkey Beach to catch your breath and from there continue on to Pigeon Island where you will discover plenty of historical sites to check out along the way. There are also two remote beaches here that you can enjoy. If you happen to visit at the right time, (usually in May) you just might find a full blown party at St. Lucia’s Jazz Festival.

If you are more interested in getting to know more about St. Lucia’s natural treasures, meet several species of birds and interact with some exotic wildlife without getting down and dirty with seemingly endless trails, then the Union Nature Trail is just perfect for you. Lazy strolls are all it takes to enjoy this trail. It doesn’t pose much of a physical challenge but there are plenty of delightful surprises waiting for you along the way.

Finally, another relaxing and scenic trail is available at the Latille Gardens. Don’t be fooled by the name, it is a real trekking site but due to the flowers and fruit-bearing trees in full bloom it is just as appropriate to call it a garden. You will also find waterfalls here. Just follow the trails and you will soon find yourself facing cascading waters and inviting natural pools. Go on, plunge in and enjoy a cool dip before you head back to where you came from or carry on to your next hiking destination in St. Lucia.

Exploring The Islands of Bahamas

Bahamas is a foremost cruise destination from anywhere in the world. Many cruisers’ experience of this Caribbean destination is pretty much limited to the major islands of Grand Bahama, Nassau and Paradise Islands. However, there is more to this breathtaking tropical haven than these often visited haunts. If you have been to the Bahamas but were not really able to explore the area due to the limited schedule that most cruises allow, a second visit is definitely worth it.

The popular islands of the Bahamas are present no mystery to the country’s visitors. Nassau in New Providence Island is well-liked for its colonial charm and world-class leisure facilities. Aside from its stunning beaches, it also boasts of the beautiful Royal Victorian Garden and an exciting shopping scene at Bay Street’s Straw Market.

Paradise Island has become a part and parcel of a Nassau getaway. Going back and forth these locations is as easy as crossing the bridge connecting them. More luxury hotels and idyllic beaches are ready to be savored and enjoyed just across the bridge so visitors make sure to spend some of their time on the neighboring island.

The Grand Bahama Island is the nearest and most accessible of all three. You can even go there on a single day cruise from Florida if you feel like it. But with its magnificent Lucayan National Park, breathtaking diving spots, golf courses and casinos – among many other attractions – a day trip will just leave you feeling disappointed for not staying a few more days.

If you think you have seen the Bahamas after visiting some of its popular islands, you could not be more mistaken. This island-country has more awe-inspiring tricks up its sleeves.

First up is the Andros Islands – a must see for underwater enthusiasts. The island has retained so much of its natural appeal rather than transformed into an island theme park by modern development. As such, various species of birds still thrive in the locality making it a major site for bird-watching enthusiasts. It also features long stretches of fine white sand beaches but its main attraction lies in what’s hidden beneath the sparkling blue waters. It has one of the largest reefs in the world with vibrant and exciting underwater flora and fauna.

Another diver’s paradise is in the islands of Exumas. It is composed of several islets and cays that are all spectacular destinations on their own. But if you want something dramatic, then you have to visit the Exumas Cays Land and Sea Park for a mind-blowing underwater experience.

If you are just looking for an idyllic beach vacation, away from the din of tropical paradise commercialism – but not too far away from the luxury of modern accommodation – then the islands of Eleuthera are perfect for you. The island’s breadth may seem paltry compared to others, but it stretches to an amazing 100 miles giving its visitors plenty of room to find privacy and serenity along its pink powdery sand beaches and multi-hued cerulean waters.

Finally, if you are a sailing enthusiast, then time your visit to the Bahamas in the month of May and mark the Long Island as your ultimate destination. It is the home of the famous Long Island Regatta and its ruggedly gorgeous landscape is not a bad visual treat either. It also features some of the deepest blue holes in the area and you may want to check those out.

So leave the cruise ship and stay awhile and explore the Bahamas in depth, you won’t be disappointed.

The Caribbean is almost always associated with the lush foliage of a typical tropical island. Aruba, however, offers a different flavor to the usual tropical destinations of this part of the world. Instead of verdant greens and mountains, you will find dramatic rock formations, arid national parks and interesting wildlife. It also features some of the best white sand beaches in the entire region.

Aruba’s beaches are the country’s main attraction. They are soft ivory sand against crystal clear turquoise waters. The views are fantastic and you can spend a whole day at one of the beaches and not get tired of it.

If you don’t mind the crowd, the beaches along the resort strip of the island are perfect for swimming, snorkeling and other water fun activities. Some of the most popular and stunningly picturesque beaches include the shallow waters of Baby Beach, the palm lined shores of Palm Beach, the snorkeling favorite Malmok Beach and the locals hangout Arashi Beach.

However, if you are looking for tranquility and an untamed landscape for a relaxing getaway, then the windward coast of Aruba is the perfect destination for you. It is still pretty much untouched by modern development and because of the strong undertow the tourists make sure to stay away from the area. So, make sure that swimming or snorkeling are not part of the itinerary when you go for a visit.

The Arikok National Park is a haven for geological formation enthusiasts. It features a wild landscape of various formations made of lava, quartz diorite and limestone. It is also home to some of the most unique species of animals in the Caribbean. Hiking and trekking are recommended but you have to watch out for the local predators just to be on the safe side.

Another interesting area for exploration by hikers is at the Casibari Boulders Clusters. Follow the sign posted walking trails and check out the series of giant tonalite boulders and their peculiar formations.  The most popular of this attraction is the Ayo Rock Formations where you can also find some ancient drawings on site. The caves of Guadirikiri, Fontein and Huliba are also worth checking out.

For a bit of history, pay a visit to several museums all over Aruba. The Museum of Antiquities is the place to go for a look at 17th century antiques and curiosities, the Numinastic Museum for its rare and ancient coins display, Model Train Museum for the train-loving child in you, and the Aruba Aloe Museum and Factory for a glimpse at one of Aruba’s major industries.

Those who are visiting the island for a family getaway, you’ll be glad to know that your kids will have plenty of things to do other than just frolic on the beach or hop around museums. There are several animal farms in the area that will definitely appeal to any kids curiosity, imagination and sense of adventurism.

Check out the Ostrich Farm for a fun interaction with these towering birds, the butterfly farm for a look at hundreds of lovely butterflies and the donkey sanctuary for a whole day of fun with these cute and gentle creatures.

Access to the perfect Caribbean Getaway

St. Lucia, without question, is a haven for nature trippers. It has several nature reserves that serve as fertile habitats for various wildlife and endangered species. It also features a diverse topography of scenic waterfalls, towering peaks and active volcanoes aside from the spectacular beaches characteristic of any Caribbean island.

With these natural attractions, there are several outdoor activities made available to those who love nature and adventure. Trekking and hiking are on top of the list, wildlife and bird watching come next and, of course, no one can resist the pull of danger and the accompanying adrenalin rush of peeking into the bubbling and hissing crater of a live volcano.

If you are spending only a few days in the area, you’ll have a hard time choosing from among the many natural attractions of St. Lucia. However, if you have a few weeks to spare don’t worry about getting bored because there are just too many things to do and so many places to visit on various parts of the island.

The town of Soufriere is an ideal start. The towering peaks of Petit Piton and Gros Piton stand sentry at the background and they beckon hikers and trekkers to explore its tracks. Just make sure you seek permission from the Forest and Land Departments and you obtain the services of a local guide.

Another volcanic attraction in the area is Mount Soufriere. If you are one of those who do not want to get exhausted through a climb but are more than eager to see the frenzied activity inside a volcano’s guts you will be happy to know that you can just easily take a car or hop a tour bus, enjoy a short ride and voila, you are just a few steps away from the thrills of a crater go-see. Follow the trails and go uphill and before you know it, you will be gazing at the bubbling and seething pool of boiling mud. The smell of sulfur can be a little overwhelming so make sure you bring along something to cover your nose and mouth.

For a breath of needed fresh air, proceed to the Diamond Botanical Gardens and cool off in the pleasant atmosphere of a lush tropical garden. You might also want to rejuvenate yourself by taking a dip in the Diamond Mineral Baths. The hot spring water cascades down a waterfall and you will notice how its color changes through different shades of yellow, green, gray and black.

From here, you can go east and explore the other natural reserves of St. Lucia. You will come across Fregate Island’s first and its famous residents in the form of scissor-tailed frigate birds. Follow the trails specially provided for visitors to keep on course and also to limit your impact on the delicate natural habitat. Enjoy the spectacular overlooking panorama of St. Lucia and the beautiful formations of the frigate birds soaring high above. The Maria Islands follow next – here there is a wide expanse of cactus vegetation and arid landscape, which makes for a perfect escape for bird watchers and endangered species enthusiasts.

Finally, proceed to the north side of the island where the beaches of Grand Anse are located. This is also a fertile habitat of various species of birds but it is famous for endangered sea turtles. Visit during the months of February to October when they go ashore to nest. The beaches on their own are great but to share it with several dozens of turtles is even more fantastic. Bring your camera.
